Mastering Your Mental Energy: The Role of Diet and Control

This IS Part of the 'Control The Controllables' series

Welcome to Part 3/5

When it comes to taking control of the controllables of our lives, one of the most important aspects to consider is the energy we create within ourselves. Our diet, exercise routine, and mental well-being all play a critical role in creating the energy we need to face challenges and be our best selves. These are aspects of our lives that we have choices and can make improvements.

Diet and Energy

One of the most important factors in creating energy is our diet. The food we eat provides the nutrients our body needs to function properly and sustain energy levels. A balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats can provide us with sustained energy throughout the day.

On the other hand, a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can leave us feeling sluggish and drained. These types of foods provide a quick energy boost but can result in a crash shortly after, leaving us feeling worse off than before.

Expert Insight: According to registered dietitian and nutritionist Julie Upton, “The quality of the foods we eat can have a huge impact on our energy levels. By focusing on whole foods that provide a variety of nutrients, we can sustain our energy throughout the day.”

Are you getting the right foods to keep you at the energy levels you need to have?

Exercise and Energy

In addition to diet, exercise is another important factor in creating energy. Regular physical activity can boost our mood, increase our energy levels, and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood-boosters, and can help improve our mental clarity.

Even a short walk or a few minutes of stretching can help improve our energy levels and mental clarity. The key is to find an exercise routine that works for you and stick with it.

Expert Insight: According to Dr. Michelle Segar, author of “No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness,” “Exercise is a natural energy booster. Even small amounts of physical activity can help improve our mood and increase our energy levels.

Be honest with yourself, do you get enough exercise?

Mental Wellbeing and Energy

Finally, mental well-being is also critical in creating energy. Stress, anxiety, and negative thinking can drain our energy and leave us feeling exhausted. Engaging in activities that promote mental well-being, such as journaling, meditation, mindfulness, and therapy, can help reduce stress and increase our overall energy levels.

By taking care of our mental health, we can improve our ability to focus, make better decisions, and take control of our lives.

Expert Insight: According to clinical psychologist and author Dr. Judith S. Beck, “The way we think has a direct impact on our energy levels. By challenging negative thoughts and focusing on positive thinking, we can improve our mental well-being and increase our energy levels.”

How is your mindset? Does it drain you or empower you?

Points of Concern

While creating energy through diet, exercise, and mental well-being can have numerous benefits, failing to implement these ideas into our lives can have negative consequences. Poor diet, lack of exercise, and negative thinking can all lead to a decrease in energy levels and an overall feeling of exhaustion.

Additionally, relying on quick fixes such as caffeine or sugar can lead to a cycle of energy crashes and dependence. It’s important to prioritize creating sustainable energy through healthy lifestyle choices and promoting mental well-being.

Vices Like Drugs & Alcohol

While there are many ways to create positive energy within ourselves, it’s important to note that some substances can have a destructive effect on our mental and physical well-being. Alcohol and drugs, for example, can create a temporary escape from reality, but ultimately they can create a loss of control and exacerbate negative emotions and behaviors.

Over time, substance abuse can have long-term effects on our mental and physical health, relationships, and overall well-being. It’s important to recognise the impact of substance abuse and seek help if needed in order to regain control and create positive energy within ourselves.

Can you Control The Controllables

Creating energy through diet, exercise, and mental well-being is an essential aspect of taking control of our lives. By focusing on the controllables and making healthy lifestyle choices, we can increase our energy levels, improve our mood, and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. However, it’s important to prioritise sustainable energy and mental well-being over quick fixes to avoid negative consequences.
